1 Corinthians study for 9/28-10/3

September 30, 2008

These questions are designed for individual or small group* inductive Bible Study. They do not have “right” answers. Their purpose is to allow you to think for yourself about what Paul has written, not just what Jim has preached.

These questions are meant to be used as for studying 1 Corinthians 5-6

Start It

Start off with a prayer

    1. Ask for the Holy Spirits guidance in your study.
    2. Pray for an openness of mind

Growing up, how did the authorities in your life talk about sex? How does our society view sex, and how has it changed over the years?

Study It

1 Corinthians 5

  • What are Paul’s concerns in this chapter?
  • What is the significance of the yeast in the dough that Paul refers to in verses 5:6-8? Where else in the Bible is this symbolism used (use a concordance). What is the scripture trying to teach us?
  • What kind of problems do we rationalize today, and why is this bad?
  • In verses 5:12-13, Paul emphasizes not to judge those outside the church, but instead judge those inside the church. Why should we not judge those outside but judge those inside?

1 Corinthians 6

  • What is the perfect model Paul wishes us to use when dealing with a dispute? How can we replicate that model?
  • Jesus said to turn the other cheek when stricken. To what extend shall we follow this example, or is there a limit?
  • What problems do you deal with where you need to learn to turn the other cheek?
  • What is the significance of our bodies being “temples of the Holy Spirit”, and how shall we behave differently because of this

Live It

  • How might our small groups put Paul’s teaching here into practice?
  • How might we hold each other more accountable? What might this look like? What might need to happen to make this a reality?
  • What do you personally need to be held accountable for this week

As a group, share any personal joys or concerns you have.

Close in prayer!

*Small Groups: do not use every question. These are meant as discussion starters. Do though take at least one question from each of the sections.
